“I did my internship at The New York City Police Museum in lower Manhattan, on Old Slip Road. It’s the smallest building on the street, with skyscrapers all around. As an intern, I studied the exhibits and lead group tours. I took care of everyone at the front desk, answered phones, processed internet orders, prepared packages, and worked in the gift shop. When I finished the internship, they offered me a job. Now, my schedule this term starts with high school classes, followed by a college course I take at CUNY. From there, I go to my job at the museum and then I go home to do my homework. I try to get reading done on the train.

“I offered my first paycheck to my mother because my older brother and sister had always given her their paychecks when I was growing up, to contribute to the household. But she said to keep it for college. Now, whatever I make, I’m saving. I received a full scholarship to the Univeristy of Bridgeport, but I really want to attend Cornell. So I’ll do my first two years at Bridgeport and transfer to Cornell. I know I will be successful no matter what.”
