Until he completed his first internship at the Marriot Marquis in New York City, Christopher hadn’t liked school at all. “That internship changed my mind. It changed who I am,” says Christopher, who explored various departments and found he loved working in hotels—especially Food and Beverage Services. Finally, school had meaning and he felt optimistic about his future.
His grief over the death of his identical twin brother when they were nine years old made it difficult to imagine or plan for any kind of a future. “School was the last place I wanted to be,” he recalls. But his mother pushed him: “She said, ‘You’re gonna thank me, Chris. You’re gonna say, ‘Ma, you were right.’”
Today, Christopher takes pride in representing his Academy to business leaders and recruiting new students to the school. “Twenty-one years old and about to leave college is too late to be getting drive and push in life,” he says. “It’s not better late than never; it’s better early.”
Christopher is currently attending Kingsborough Community College. He plans to pursue a career in hotel management at one the many prestigious hotels in New York City.
