An in-school student conference emphasizing work-based learning was recently held at Orchard Park High School and was attended by all 111 students belonging to the Academy of Finance. The purpose of the conference was to fulfill grade-specific requirements within the academy’s “Work-Based Learning” program.

Throughout the day, students followed a grade-specific schedule that included seminars, hands-on activities and various guest speakers. The academy believes that among the many benefits to students is the development of workplace competencies along with establishing a clear connection between education and work. It also ensures that students are getting the skills necessary for internship preparation, and achievement and career awareness and exploration. Creating this type of a connection to the larger business community is at the heart of the Academy of Finance.

Students had the opportunity to work directly with more than 50 academy teachers, advisory board members, National Academy Foundation staff and other business professionals in a variety of theme-based endeavors. This year’s conference was sponsored by Brad Rauch from Morgan Stanley and included a breakfast compliments of Tim Hortons and a luncheon featuring academy partner Cappelli’s Pizzeria.

The Academy of Finance program was launched at Orchard Park High School in 2004 and has since educated more than 250 students about the broad career opportunities available in the ever changing financial services industry through involvement in a hands-on business curriculum.

Students learn workplace skills and develop self-confidence as they participate in a rigorous and relevant business curriculum. A local advisory board made up of more than 30 business partners, educational liaisons, parents, business teachers and community leaders oversees the operation of the Academy of Finance program.
