Many Academies of Information Technology offer a SAS® programming course in addition to their NAF courses. Two high school level courses in SAS programming and all necessary software are available to AOITs at no cost. The teacher training will be provided on August 2 – 6 in Cary, NC, at the SAS campus. There is a $75 registration fee to reserve a seat in the class.

AOIT Director Julie Oster believes her students at Apex High School, Apex, NC, will be ready for tomorrow’s careers because they study SAS Programming. Oster explains, “SAS programming gives students a marketable job skill. Any career search will turn up thousands of jobs for people with SAS programming skills. Since SAS can be used in almost any industry and is a requirement in many post-secondary programs, our students are prepared for both college and careers.”

Leading corporations use SAS every day to solve complex problems. IT management, health informatics, risk management, and fraud detection are rapidly growing fields in the global economy, and they all rely on accurate data analysis and advanced analytics. Ninety percent of the top corporations in the FORTUNE Global 500® use SAS to analyze their data, but many high school students are unaware of the huge career opportunities in the growing field of advanced analytics. A growing network of teachers and schools are now providing students with a college and career advantage by teaching SAS.

Students are using SAS to solve practical problems requiring advanced data analysis. Sharon Jones’ students at Phillip O. Berry Academy in Charlotte, NC, used SAS to solve a transportation problem. They analyzed transportation data and presented their findings to the school board to show how proposed changes in bus routes would affect their school. Jones says, "The transportation survey gave students the opportunity to see how SAS can be used to research and analyze information in a real-life scenario. The SAS programming class allowed them to go beyond the school walls, and students felt as though they were making a difference in a community problem."

Dru Urquart, Director of the AOIT at Spruce Creek High School in Port Orange, FL, also sees great value in the course. “The SAS programming curriculum is extremely well-written and easy to follow. The training session at SAS was excellent and fully prepared me to offer the courses to my students. I have been teaching SAS programming at my high school for two years and the students really enjoy it.”
