Celebrating National Engineers Week All Year Round: A Glimpse into the Future through an Intern’s Eyes
As February comes to a close, and having recently celebrated National Engineers Week, it’s important to think about how we can continue to celebrate the essence of this time all year round – centered around spotlighting the innovative spirit and contributions of engineers around the globe. It’s a period dedicated to inspiring the next generation of engineers, showcasing the diverse career paths in engineering, and highlighting how these professionals tackle the world’s most pressing challenges. This year, amidst the celebrations, NAF is thrilled to spotlight the personal journey of a young intern, Bryan O., whose experience at Collins Aerospace during the “Redefining Futures” internship program offers a vibrant illustration of what it means to step into the world of engineering.
Bryan, a senior student-athlete from Rocky River High School with a keen interest in computer science, embarked on his journey with curiosity and a drive to make a difference. His story is not just about the technical skills gained; it’s a testament to the power of mentorship, collaboration, and real-world challenges. Through his internship, Bryan was tasked with creating a SharePoint for the cyber defense team, a project that not only honed his technical prowess but also nurtured his leadership and public speaking skills.
Day-to-day, Bryan’s internship was a blend of innovation and interaction. From daily Zoom meetings with his manager and team, to in-person presentations, the experience was a balanced mix of remote and hands-on work. This setup provided Bryan with a unique perspective on virtual collaboration, a skill increasingly vital in today’s digital age.
The “Redefining Futures” internship wasn’t just a learning opportunity for Bryan; it was a steppingstone towards his future ambitions. With aspirations to major in computer science and earn a bachelor’s degree, Bryan’s journey is just beginning. His experience at Collins Aerospace is a shining example of how National Engineers Week is not only a celebration of current engineering achievements but also a launchpad for nurturing the innovators of tomorrow.
Bryan’s story underscores the essence of this important week that we can continue to celebrate year round: inspiration, innovation, and introspection. It’s a reminder that engineering is not just about solving problems; it’s about opening doors to new possibilities, creating connections, and building a brighter future. Through initiatives like the “Redefining Futures” internship, we can look forward to a world shaped by the next generation of engineers, ready to take on whatever challenges come their way.
