NEW BRITAIN, CT (WFSB) –
Tax season is a busy time at New Britain High School because students are doing tax returns.
It’s part of a business program, and students are learning more than they ever dreamed.
A group of New Britain High School students are part of the school’s academy of finance. Luis Rivera, who is a senior at New Britain High School, has done roughly 50 tax returns this year.
“You get the 12 hours of training and you get used to it,” Rivera said about doing tax returns. “I was real nervous at first when it started.”
Rivera does people’s tax returns for free and each one is checked by Juan Barrios, who works for a community organization that helps students start careers in business. Barrios is also a graduate of New Britain High School.
“Speaking from experience I knew this program does a great job showing students all the different career paths and the skills they need to be successful,” Barrios said.
Since the program started, seven students are now working outside the school and are getting paid. Barrios said they are well on their way to a career.
Rivera is working for a credit union while Samantha Lopez is an accounting clerk for a hospital. For Lopez, she said this group is a perfect fit.
“I get to meet new people. I get to try new things,” Lopez said. “Things that make me look better to employers. Hey, I want to have her in my job and my field.”
