Compton Unified School District (CUSD) is setting new benchmarks in education with a robust focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) initiatives across all grade levels. This commitment to innovation and student success has not only transformed the educational landscape in Compton but has also earned the district several prestigious awards and recognitions.

Under the leadership of Superintendent Darin Brawley, the district has developed a comprehensive approach to equip students with critical thinking, problem-solving, and technical skills necessary for success in high-demand careers while developing pipeline programs that carry students from elementary school through high school.

CUSD’s commitment to STEM is part of a broader strategy to ensure all students are college and career ready. With a 93% graduation rate, the district ranks #1 in Los Angeles County and #1 in California among districts of similar size and socioeconomic status. Additionally, the district’s College & Career Indicator (CCI) of 50% underscores its success in preparing students for postsecondary opportunities.

The STEM offerings include: Aerospace Engineering; Biotechnology; Robotics and Engineering; Cybersecurity; Green Engineering, and more. Compton’s STEM focus also includes three NAF Academies of Engineering that support nearly 200 students annually since their inception in 2023. These academies are structured as small learning communities within larger comprehensive high schools.

“The NAF Engineering Academies at Centennial, Compton, and Dominguez are more than a program, they are a gateway to a world of possibilities,” said Superintendent Brawley.

These programs are supported by state-of-the-art facilities and partnerships with industry leaders, ensuring students receive relevant curricula and real-world exposure. CUSD hosts High School Showcase Days, where students, families, and community members can explore the diverse career and college pathways offered at Compton High School, Centennial High School, Dominguez High School, and Compton Early College High School.

CUSD’s dedication to excellence has garnered impressive accolades over the past year, including the:

  • Golden Bell Award – CUSD’s “Compton Goes to College!” initiative recently earned the 2024 Golden Bell Award from the California School Boards Association (CSBA). This award focuses on increasing college access and readiness.
  • Power of Hope Award – The district’s College & Career Department received the 2024 Power of Hope Award, recognizing its outstanding efforts to improve college and career outcomes across the district.
  • District of Distinction Award – Compton Unified was one of only seven districts nationwide to receive the District of Distinction Award from the District Administration Leadership Institute (DALI). This recognition highlights the district’s leadership in educational technology and its innovative approach to engaging students.

CUSD’s focus on STEM and its award-winning initiatives demonstrate a commitment to transforming lives through education. By fostering innovation and inclusivity, Compton Unified is proving that excellence can thrive anywhere, inspiring students to become tomorrow’s leaders and changemakers.
