Esperanza: A Message in Celebration of Hispanic Heritage and Hope
Querida Familia,
Connected through our heritage and the impact we’re all looking to achieve for future generations, we reach out to you con esperanza. Hopeful for the future, we continue our work – knowing our school districts and business partners are inspiring the 112,000+ students we serve across the nation. 43% of our students identify as Hispanic and it’s our goal to empower them to be the best version of themselves they can be.
“Having a culture that is a huge melting pot of other cultures allows you to see other walks of life and allows you to connect with others as well. I’ve always been keen on being able to network but it feels special to relate to others of a different culture through experiences that are similar whether its food, music, dance.”
– Alex Torres, NAF Staff, New Jersey
National Hispanic Heritage Month recognizes the achievements and contributions of Hispanic American champions who have inspired others to achieve success. We celebrate you! The resilience and innovation you’ve shown over the last few years have been inspiring to say the least. We’ve heard of your moving student, alumni, educator, advisory board member, volunteer stories and can’t wait to hear more.
“I get excited when the chance is presented to integrate my heritage into my work both personally and professionally, especially when it comes to relationship building. For example, opportunities to connect over food, dance, or music allow for non-intimidating conversations and fellowship. This can also lead to the development of a “familia” (family) status even among unrelated individuals forming supportive communities.“
– Rey Bermudez, NAF Staff, Connecticut
Though our paths may be very different than those that came before us and those that are standing next to us, we can overcome anything by holding onto our esperanza. The National Council of Hispanic Employment Program Managers (NCHEPM), announced the 2021 Hispanic Heritage Month observance theme: “Esperanza: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage and Hope.” The theme invites us to celebrate Hispanic Heritage and to reflect on how great our tomorrow can be if we hold onto our resilience and hope. It encourages us to reflect on all of the contributions Hispanics have made in the past and will continue to make in the future. It is also a reminder that we are stronger together.
“I think that the best way to better support us is to continue to support us. When we know that there are people standing up for us and standing with us, it makes it much easier for us to do our best.”
– Guillermina, NAF Student, California
