Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson is to make a stop at Porterville Unified School District’s Harmony Magnet Academy of Engineering Friday during a two-day visit to Central Valley schools that offer career technical education programs.

After stopping at Kings County’s Avenal High School on Thursday, Torlakson will meet with Harmony students and school administrators Friday to learn more about the academy’s engineering program which was one of the first of its kind when introduced in 2008 when Harmony first opened its doors.

The engineering academy offers students a four-year, hands-on learning experience centered around science, technology, engineering and math that is intended to prepare participants for what comes after high school — college or a career.

Following Torlakson’s 9 a.m. visit to Harmony, he, along with school administrators and academy representatives, will discuss the work coming from California academies.
