Crowe & Dunlevy is hosting Sha’Vona Mustin and Kayleisha Stewart in a five-week joint internship from the Law and Public Safety Career Academy at Douglass High School. The students also are participating with R.K. Black, a provider of office technology solutions, according to a news release.

During their time at Crowe & Dunlevy, Mustin and Stewart will observe the legal system while shadowing attorneys from the firm’s nearly 30 practice groups. The program is designed to improve their understanding of the legal system while helping them determine if the legal field is a profession they want to enter.

“We are committed to diversity, and that begins with teaching and recruiting students from diverse backgrounds,” said Timila S. Rother, president and CEO of the firm.

“We’ve had a long tradition of supporting the next generation of legal professionals through scholarships at Oklahoma law schools, and are proud to add this partnership with Douglass High School, which includes a summer internship.”

The only Law and Public Safety Career Academy in Oklahoma, its focus is to provide students, especially those who may want to become lawyers, paralegals or legal assistants, with opportunities to learn about, observe and generally improve understanding of the legal system.

Crowe & Dunlevy diversity committee chairman Christopher M. Staine serves on the Douglass High School Law and Public Safety Career Academy advisory board and is the firm’s managing attorney for the internship.

The academy requires students to complete a work-based learning experience, such as a summer internship in a related field. Organizations in the community, including Crowe & Dunlevy and the Oklahoma City police and fire departments, often partner with the academy to provide opportunities to students.
