Yadira always knew that a science path was right for her. Growing up with few resources in Honduras, her parents would try to buy her and her sister toys. But the typical “girl” toys didn’t interest her – she wanted the machines. She wanted to take things apart and put them back together.

In New York City she sought a school with a strong science curriculum. Despite initial hurdles, she found her place in NAF’s Academy of Information Technology (AOIT) program at Paul Robeson High School. At the time, NAF had not yet founded the Academy of Engineering, but Yadira discovered ample opportunities that aligned with her interests to set the course of her career in motion, including an internship at NAF’s headquarters. “The internship opportunities at NAF were life-changing,” she recalls. “They gave me a head start in navigating corporate environments and applying technical skills in real-world scenarios.”

A Determined Path to NASA

Inspired by her childhood fascination with machines and robotics, Yadira pursued mechanical engineering, a decision rooted in her love for creating and problem-solving. Over the years, her dedication led her to roles in particle physics, and eventually aerospace engineering, fueled by her dream of becoming an astronaut.

“When I saw the astronaut requirements at NASA, I realized I met every one of them. It was a powerful moment—I no longer had that mental block holding me back,” Yadira shares. This realization prompted her transition to aerospace, a move that aligned with her lifelong passion for space exploration.

Leveraging Transferable Skills for Success

Yadira emphasizes the importance of transferable skills cultivated during her time with NAF. From technical expertise in IT and database management to Future Ready Skills, like communication and mentorship, her NAF experiences have influenced every stage of her career.

“Even now, I draw on what I learned in high school,” she says. “From designing websites to presenting data, those foundational skills remain essential.”

Inspiring the Next Generation

As a mentor, Yadira is committed to paying it forward. Her participation in NASA’s mentorship programs and NAF’s Alumni Mentorship Program reflects her dedication to fostering opportunities for others. “I want to remind the next generation that they don’t have to fit a mold to succeed,” she says. “Be yourself and pursue your dreams with passion and determination.”

Advice for Aspiring Engineers

For those considering careers in STEM, Yadira offers this wisdom: “Don’t let societal expectations define your path. Create your own journey, adopt quickly to challenges, and use every experience as an opportunity to grow.”
