One of the biggest challenges educators face today is helping students bridge the gap between classroom learning and the real world they are preparing to enter. Content knowledge matters, but the ability to apply that knowledge creatively, critically, and confidently to unfamiliar problems matters even more.

We recently surveyed educators using KnoPro in their classrooms and the results were clear: KnoPro Challenges and Skillbuilders are playing a meaningful role in helping students develop those exact problem-solving skills.

Building Awareness Beyond the Classroom

Teachers consistently shared that KnoPro helps students become more aware of what is happening beyond their immediate environment. Because KnoPro Challenges are developed with corporate partners, they range in topics and introduce students to new industries and new job functions. Plus, students using KnoPro do more than complete assignments, they are connecting classroom concepts to real-world issues they may not have previously considered. Exposure to authentic problems encourages them to think about how their learning applies to current events, community needs, and future careers.

Several educators noted that this awareness shift is powerful. Students begin to recognize that the skills they are learning today are the same ones they will need to navigate their lives after graduation. That realization alone can change how seriously they engage with learning.

“KnoPro has pushed my students to broaden their awareness of real-world issues they had never previously considered.”

Encouraging Critical and Creative Thinking

A recurring theme in teacher responses was how KnoPro encourages students to think not only outside the box but beyond the concept of boxes! Challenges and Skillbuilders prompt students to move beyond obvious answers, explore multiple perspectives, and dig deeper before proposing solutions.

Teachers observed students who had experienced the KnoPro platform:

  • Applying textbook concepts to unfamiliar, real-world scenarios

  • Exploring problems with greater curiosity and an inquisitive mindset

  • Developing stronger critical thinking skills through open-ended tasks

  • Expressing creativity in both written and verbal responses

Rather than searching for a single “right” answer, students learn that meaningful solutions often require exploration, iteration, and thoughtful reasoning.

“Students now approach problems with a more inquisitive mindset—looking beyond the obvious and exploring multiple perspectives.”

A Solution-Oriented Mindset

Over time, many educators highlighted a noticeable shift in student mindset. KnoPro’s unique Challenges format encourages a “solution first” attitude, helping students see the objectives of the Challenge as opportunities rather than obstacles. Students become more comfortable generating ideas, testing approaches, and understanding that positive outcomes can come from thoughtful problem-solving.

This shift is especially impactful for students who may hesitate to share ideas. Teachers reported that students enjoy expressing their thoughts, collaborating with peers, and even conducting research to support their ideas. Over time, this builds confidence and resilience, both essential skills for life beyond school.

Daily Engagement That Students Look Forward To

Skillbuilders, in particular, were frequently mentioned as an impactful classroom routine. Teachers described students completing them daily, looking forward to them, and engaging with enthusiasm. Whether used as do-now activities, bell ringers, or short skill-building exercises, these moments of consistent practice reinforce problem-solving habits over time.

Recent examples include challenging students to imagine running tourism efforts in their hometowns and developing reasons for visitors to stop and explore; creating a cash-rounding policy for a store in response to the declining availability of pennies; and stepping into the role of a child life specialist to determine how to keep a young patient calm and engaged during a medical procedure. Through these real-world challenges, students build essential skills such as communication, empathy, and problem-solving.

Beyond these real-world applications, educators also highlighted how Skillbuilders support skill development across different subjects and learning environments, from strengthening communication skills in English classes to applying advanced knowledge in specialized courses, such as AI magnet programs.

“My students do the Skillbuilders daily and look forward to it.”

Preparing Students for What Comes Next

Ultimately, teacher feedback points to a clear outcome: KnoPro helps students better understand how to prepare for their futures. By practicing real-world problem-solving now, students gain experience thinking critically, collaborating effectively, and approaching unfamiliar challenges with confidence.

As one teacher summarized through their students’ experience, KnoPro has changed how students think about solving problems and how they see the world around them. That shift, from passive learning to active problem-solving, is exactly what prepares students to thrive in whatever comes next.

Are you ready to add these outcomes to your classroom? Learn more about KnoPro’s latest Challenge (running through October 25): Aerospace Engineering: Next-Gen Flight, sponsored by RTX. In this Challenge, students will come up with a product, business, or marketing campaign idea that addresses the question: How will we fly in 2050?
