Event Spotlight: 2023 Winter Student Conference
On Friday, February 3rd, Detroit Public Schools Community District, NAF, and Strategic Community Partners were proud to present the Winter Student Conference! This informative and engaging event was designed specifically for high school seniors to help them create and walk away with their plans for success post-graduation. Approximately 200 students from both NAF and non-NAF academies participated in this robust event at Wayne County Community College Downtown Campus.
The day offered opportunities for networking, with industry professionals and post-secondary partners; career preparation activities, including resume building, LinkedIn tips and tricks, and guidance on how to complete a job application; a post-secondary panel; and opportunities for exploration into several diverse career pathways. All students received a head shot, courtesy of LinkedIn, and dressed to impress in business attire. There was also a DJ; raffles; music; and giveaways to keep the energy up and the fun going!
For NAF students, there was an opportunity to learn more about the NAF Alumni Network and how to stay connected after graduation. As a special addition, Detroit-area alumni presented to NAF students — sharing their academy experiences, career journeys, as well as offering advice, and answering questions. It was a tremendous and interactive learning opportunity and got seniors excited for all the benefits to come.
NAF was thrilled to participate in the Winter Student Conference, as Detroit is very close to our heart and has been a high-priority area for us for decades, since we opened our first NAF Academy there at Golightly Career and Technical Center in 1993. From there, we’ve expanded to implement nearly 35 academies in more than 20 high schools and are proud to have named Detroit and the Tri-County area as our first Future Ready Community!
Thank you again to DPSCD, Wayne County Community College District, and SCP, for being our partners in putting on this amazing event and ensuring our students are prepared for college, career, and future success.
