HPE Employee Reflects on NAF Internship Experience
We recently had the opportunity to participate in a pilot program here at HP where the high school summer intern program affords incoming seniors the opportunity to experience the HP culture, shadow a full-time employee, work on a summer project and understand the basics of a professional office environment. On top of that, we at HP have the opportunity to better understand the next generation of professionals that will be entering the workplace.
As a result of this program we had three NAF interns working across three different teams within Global Corporate Services at Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE). Below you can see some of the success stories related to the work that these students completed.
Our first intern was working on a project supporting the replication of HPE Intranet sites and the testing and implementation of more than 2,000 intranet sites and pages. In this role the intern had to interface with HPE stakeholders across the globe to understand the requirements for the replicated sites. Our intern also worked with our technical team to ensure all of the technical work was completed and that our sites were accessible, tested and met the needs of our clients. The intern drafted and sent out emails to a global audience and then followed up with those that had not responded to ensure we close the loop on testing. Our intern played a very significant role in ensuring this effort was successful.
Our second intern spent her time working in two different capacities. The majority of their time was spent managing the Capital Approval process. As a part of this process, they would receive capital requests from across HPE and then ensure those requests were routed and approved by the appropriate procurement organizations. Her work in this process was critical in ensuring speedy approval and thorough analysis of HPE capital requests. Secondarily, she spent some of her time monitoring “fallout” from our Agency Contractor procurement process. In this role, she would monitor daily reports and contact engagement managers if their Agency Contractor orders needed action or attention.
Our third intern worked on the duplication of an internal procurement tool. Setting up a secondary procurement system required cloning and cleansing. In order to ensure customer experience would be similar for both systems, our intern sifted through our current test and production environments to capture images, categorize them, highlight images missing in our current system, and then send them to be loaded. Additionally, our intern submitted test purchase orders for all of our catalog suppliers to ensure that orders continued to route correctly to suppliers even after the system duplication. Lastly, our intern began capturing contract and catalog ownership information which would be used to determine key contacts for user inquiries and supplier catalog update requests.
In summary, all of the NAF interns had goals set forth for them both at a personal level as well as a project level and all of the candidates greatly exceeded our expectations. Although they were only here for a short 8-10 week timeframe they were critical members of our teams and all had the opportunity to work with a global team across all time zones and interface directly with our internal clients. I know we were all amazed by the level of professionalism and how quickly they caught on to complex business processes and the amount of impact they had across the HPE landscape. The students learned quite a bit while they were here and were exposed to a very large company in the IT industry and also provided great value to our teams. You could tell the students were well prepared by NAF and by the school for these internships.
We really appreciated the opportunity to work with the students this summer!
