Students at Monticello High School gave out one of this season’s most precious gifts of all Saturday. They gave out tax return preparation assistance.
A teacher involved with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, or VITA, says they process about 200 returns each year for free.
In addition to helping community members, students say taking part helps prepare them for real life experiences. They also talked about the importance of building financial skills at a young age.
“For example even in Academy of Finance, the financial decision making class, we learn about expenses and how to deal with credit, and it helps us situate our wages so in the future we know how to be financially stable,” said Joseph Evans, Monticello High School student.
A school employee says this was the 13th year for the program.
