ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) — Local students were given the opportunity to teach the community about the importance of financial literacy.

Students at Elmira High School held their first “Financial Literacy Fair” Friday afternoon.

The fair was open to the public and touched upon a variety of topics from budgeting to cash flow.

The school’s academy of finance program hosted the event to teach others the importance of financial planning and looking ahead to the future.

“Finance is found in any profession,” said Elmira High School Financial Teacher, Cheryl Sweeney. “So no matter what the student feels they might want to pursue after high school, finances can certainly help them. This gives them sort of a procured pathway taking course in a particular area so that it might help them in deciding what their path might be.”

The Academy of Finance is a new program at Elmira High School which starts with tenth graders all the way through senior year.

The financial literacy fair was a part of the students final project for the course.
