Nonprofit and Global Tech Leader encourage STEM education among high school students
(May 22, 2019 – New York, NY and Raleigh, NC) –Lenovo and NAF have announced the winners of the fifth annual Lenovo Scholar Network National Mobile App Development Competition.
The app development program encourages greater interest among underserved high school students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) while providing them with high-tech skills critical in today’s job market. This year’s Mobile App Development Competition included teams of students from 120 NAF academies across the U.S. who spent months developing applications that will be of service in their classrooms and communities. Participating academies developed apps on Lenovo’s ThinkPad notebook PCs and Yoga brand tablets.
This year’s five winning apps are:
BeetLead
• Enloe High School, Academy of Health Sciences, Raleigh, NC
• Provides a user-friendly way for people of all ages to track the levels of lead in their blood over an extended period of time
Collier Mobile
• Barron Collier High School Academy of Hospitality and Tourism, Naples, FL
• Enables students in Collier County Public Schools to use their mobile device to access important school-based information, see their academic progress, and receive alerts and notifications from their high school

• Hamburg High School Academy of Finance, Hamburg, NY
• A resource for people to improve their mental health and support others
SmartCash
• Southwest Miami Senior High School Academy of Finance, Miami, FL
• Educates about budgeting, credit, and how to improve current credit
Transpiration
• Carencro High School Academy of Information Technology, Lafayette, LA
• Designed to help people relax with breathing exercises, drawing, and soundscapes
Mobile App Competition Fan Favorite Voting Through July 8th
A panel of more than 150 judges, including from NAF partners Citi and Lenovo, selected this year’s winners. The winning teams will present their apps at NAF’s annual professional development conference, NAF Next 2019, in Detroit July 7-10th.

The 2019-20 school year will mark the sixth year of the Lenovo and NAF partnership and the Lenovo Scholar Network, with more than 6,000 students participating from NAF academies across the U.S.
Lenovo and NAF Partnership
NAF and Lenovo have partnered on the Lenovo Scholar Network since 2014, originally serving 10 NAF academies and 400 students, and for this 2018-19 school year, growing to 133 NAF academies in all themes and 6,000 students.
Additional NAF-Lenovo engagements include a 1:1 mentoring program pairing NAF students with Lenovo employee volunteers. Thirty NAF school students will join Lenovo starting in June for paid internships. This marks the third year that Lenovo has employed NAF students from the Research Triangle, North Carolina region. Earlier this month, NAF honored Lenovo at its 16th annual Benefit event in New York City, where Lenovo North America Intelligent Devices Group President Matt Zielinski announced a 4-year, $1 million initiative to create internships for NAF students at post-secondary institutions in North Carolina, one of Lenovo’s worldwide headquarters.
